Is it possible to remove or lighten a birthmark?

I am not aware of an over the counter product to lighten a birthmark however, I went to school with a girl who had a portwine stain birthmark on her face. She went to a dermatologist who was able to somehow "lighten" it. I don't know what is involved. I would suggest you seek a reputable dermatologist to make inquiries about treatments, success rates, and any possible complications.
