Is it possible to lactate when you are not pregnant?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Lactation is hormonally driven, so anybody with mammary glands and the appropriate hormonal triggers (adequate concentrations of prolactin and oxytocin) can lactate. Newborn babies of both sexes frequently lactate due to exposure to maternal hormones, and adult males can lactate as a result of hormonal treatment for prostate cancer or from hormonal changes related to extreme stress. Lactation can be deliberately induced using hormones as well as mechanical stimulation (which simulates a nursing infant and increases the body's own production of prolactin and oxytocin).

Absolutely! Adoptive parents can breastfeed their new babies.
Good ways to induce lactation would be with a breast pump, herbal remedies (such as Fenugreek and Mothers Milk Tea), Perscriptions (Reglan), and even foods that encourage milk production (such as Oatmeal).
