You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Usually, you can just open Word again and it will offer up the last draft it auto-saved for you. If not, there's really nothing you can do. When your computer shuts down, it erases all temporary files (which is what your document is until you save it).
I worked at tech support at my university for a year. A student came in who was working on her graduate thesis, and she wanted to know where her thesis had gone. Turns out, she had done what you did - she was working on her paper when her computer shut down, and she opened the temporary draft Word auto-saved for her. Well, she kept working from that temporary file, and didn't re-save the paper into her Documents as a proper Word file. So she wandered into our office going, "Where's my paper?" and we were forced to tell her it was lost in the ether. A very uncomfortable moment...
The lesson is - save often! :)
