I know that there are a lot of online colleges out there that promise to help you get your degree. Is this actually possible, and if so, do employers actually recognize an online degree?

It is entirely possible to get a legitimate and valuable degree online. As long as you put in a lot of research and read college reviews, you will be able to separate the good, reputed online degree programs. Employers also understand that not everyone can afford to quit their jobs in order to pursue a college degree, so they are becoming more and more open to the concept. Also, the quality of online degree programs is equal to what is delivered on campus, and their credibility is unquestionable. However, this only holds true if you enroll into an accredited school and stay away from diploma mills!

I'm earning my degree through the University of Maryland University College's distance learning program. It's all online, but all the exams are proctored through the college that's close to me. It's an honest to goodness real degree, so there's no worry about it not being recongnized by employers or other professionals. We're required to follow the same course guidelines and specifications all the rest of the university follow when they go to face to face classes. It's a huge challenge, especially when you're used to working in a group, but it's worth it considering the time I'm saving on the commute and class time

Yes it is possible to get an online degree. When I think of online and distance education in Canada for example,I think of Athabasca University in Alberta, "canada's Leader in Online & Distance Education" http://www.athabascau.ca/ although the University of Waterloo also comes to mind for distance education, although they have many non online distance courses also, you can "Take a few courses or complete an entire degree" http://de.uwaterloo.ca/

I actually meant "absolutely, as long as the are accredited" in response to "do employers actually recognize an online degree".
Perception is reality. I will be more careful with my sentence structure.
I think that this is a pretty complete list.
My only addition is that as a contributor to a couple of online educational institutions, I think it would be beneficial for you to find out what Learning Management System (LMS) the school employs to deliver the content to you.
There are significant differences (both strengths and weaknesses) of the online systems that deliver the information to you. Knowing which one is best for you and which school offers that system should be a priority consideration.
I won't refute this... But, you CAN get degrees from colleges that are not accredited on-line. As with ANY "online" degree, you have to be careful.
Then again, you have to understand what accreditations a school has. There are only one or two that are nationally/internationally recognized.
Even MIT and UCLA were not accredited at one point...
