Is it possible to change a cat's sleep pattern?
Be honest... am I doomed?

They were both feral and had the normal nocturnal lifestyle when we received them. However, their running and playing at all hours of the night (and morning) was unacceptable.
It should be noted that cats generally sleep a lot, which makes them prone to activity at any time of the day. They are usually well rested at any time and ready to terrorize furniture at a moments notice. House cats specifically get a lot of sleep, both out of need but also from boredom, especially if they are not aloud outside.
We found that by feeding them in the morning and late afternoon, this broke their normal eating/hunting behaviors and they had the energy to play in the afternoon and early evening only. We sometimes will give them a small portion in the evening if they are being especially obnoxious. Also, by playing with them and keeping them active during the day, they will tend to have a more calm evening. It helps to have two or more cats that can keep each other busy. If they go outside during the day, chances are they will sleep more often at night, since they're active during the day.
With that said, our cats sleep through the night, but like a small child, they are always awake before we are, waiting for their next meal. They have been "trained" to wait for us and not to make a fuss through our Planned Ignoring techniques. Telling them "NO" and not letting them be demanding can go a long way to change their behavior.
Hope that helps!

M$But my other cat that just died was always at my side and followed me everywhere. She would sleep by me and around four would be up on me. She was not looking to eat but just wanted to lay on top of me. So I guess to stop this you would have to keep the cats at a distance so they don't other you.

M$You're right... part of it depends on the personality. I rescued this cat as an adult and always wondered about her previous situation, since she has food 'issues'. I think her last owner may have passed away and she was left hungry and alone for a short stint.
Besides having the 'food' issues... she's the best cat in the world! She just demands to be petted while she eats and she loves to eat at 5:00 am!
All my cats are rescue cats that I've taken in and they are so happy to be in. After they're here a little while they don't even want to get out anymore, just look out the window.
One thing I suggest is to get a large cat playpen and place the cat there whenever you want to sleep. In that way your cat will not wake you up since it will be in the cat playpen. Some of these cat playpens have a lot of room in them, so you won't have to worry about your cat being uncomfortable, and they are totally safe. You can put their favorite toy in there so as to eliminate boredom and loneliness.

Thanks Brendon, I will try to withhold the food bowl and give her specific feeding times.
If you don't see on Mahalo for a while, you might want to call the authorities. ;)
