Is it okay to use a hair dryer?

Will a blow dryer dry out my hair? Should I use the cool setting on my blow dryer?

If you take a little care when using a hairdryer you should not cause much damage to your hair.

After you have shampooed your hair, always use a conditioner when you have rinsed your hair, towel dry it as much as possible.

When you use the hairdryer, try not to use it on the hottest setting, or if you must, not for very long. The lower settings will still dry your hair and will cause less damage. Keep the dryer away from your scalp, about 10 inches away from your head is best.

If you are blow drying your hair, don't leave it pointed at one section for too long.

Try using a heat activated conditioner to off-set any damage. When you are able to, give your hair a break by allowing it to dry naturally.

You should definitely try to minimize using a blow dryer to dry your hair (especially on a hot setting) as the heat from a hair dryer can cause damage to your hair. When you apply heat to your hair you are not only removing the surface moisture that is there from washing your hair, but you also remove some of the hair’s natural moisture as well. Removing the natural moisture in your hair can cause damage to the hair cuticle.

Letting your hair air dry as much as possible will definitely help minimize any damage. From there, if you can take advantage of a hair dryer’s cool setting you will also be better off.
