Is it okay to have pets around a newborn?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Having pets around your infant is fine depending on the breed and temperament of your pet. The number one priority is safety. When introducing your newborn to your pet, especially dogs, make sure it is properly restrained and under control. It is normal for the pet to want to sniff the baby, just keep the dog or cat at least a foot away and avoid letting the animal lick. This is because of the delicate immune system of the baby.
Another tip for safety with pets and newborns is to never leave them unattended together. Use baby gates and/or crates when you need to complete daily tasks, like cooking, showering, and while sleeping. This will remove the unintentional/intentional accidents.
If there are any signs of aggression toward the newborn, it is advised to remove the pet from the home as soon as possible. Try to find a family member or friend without children or a no kill or rescue shelter that will find the pet a new home.
