Is it okay to excavate sacred places or burial grounds in the name of science?

Authorities in the UK recently discovered a body in the backyard of someone's property, and now they are predicting the site may have been an ancient burial ground. Archeologists would likely love to get their hands on the artifacts that lie beneath, but is that wrong? Are the discoveries we could make worth the disgrace we would pay to their chosen, eternal resting spots?

To be honest, I think it depends on the situation. I agree with @omicron that there are ways to discover things while still being respectful and leaving things the way that you found them. At the same time, there is really no need to go diggin up every ancient burial ground in the name of science, as there is likely very little that can be gained from examining every body. Living in Oklahoma, we hear numerous accounts of someone "discovering an ancient Indian burial ground," and while there may be plenty of location around here where Native Americans are buried, the reality is that very few of these claims are legitimate or even "ancient."

Still, there is obviously a great deal of scientific information that can be gained from some of these excavations that is beneficial in helping us treat diseases of modern times and learning more about who we are and where we came from. Yesterday, the Journal of American Medicine contained an intriguing article about what was discovered in the exhumation of the body of King Tut. They were able to examine the bodies and DNA of other Egyptians an pharoahs that were preserved nearby and establish a family lineage.

In addition, they were able to conclude that King Tut had some sort of bone disorder which may have stunted his growth and also presumably died of malaria. This information has given scientific researchers a lot of information about the specific kind of genetic bone disorder that occurred in Tutankhamen's family tree that can help children with this disorder today as well as valuable historical information that may have otherwise gone undiscovered.

No not if there are families living on the grounds. I would investigate what was found and not go any further. I have always heard that digging up the dead remains of a human body brings spirit from the graves. No, it is not a good idea.

Would you want a stranger to dig up your relatives?

While many people may find the information of Archeological digs interesting I don't think that the vast majority of the world cares one way or another about the finds except for the $$$ signs. I certainly wouldn't want people to suddenly start digging around 100 years from now in the cemetery where my family members are buried. Everyone deserves dignity and respect of religion.

NO!!!! Messing with a sacred burial ground is just asking for bad news, not to mention, would you want to be disturbed after you'd been buried? I wouldn't. If there were more people with respect for the dead and not just thinking about digging stuff up for their own personal gain, we wouldn't have supernatural beings that decide to shove me over at the Old Auburn Cemetery. Or push my friends into creepy pools in Carmichael. Just sayin.

Yes. Furthermore, if there is no scientific reason they should be bulldozed anyway just to reduce superstition.

Now that we know dinosaurs are pretty much birds, and lots of birds are sacred, I'm sure you are right.
