Is it ok to turn external hard drives on and off at the surge protector rather than the hard drive on-off switch itself?
As in, leaving the hard drive switched on but (after ejecting from the computer) turning it off at the surge protector power strip.

An opinion: Just on the face of it, if you think about it: the power strip is your surge protector--if the power BEHIND it (outlet in wall) surges, you're protected. The unit's own switch is designed to turn its power on and off.
Kill the power and try to power up and you'll artificially create a power surge IN FRONT OF the power strip.
Seems to me, and I've worked with lots of radio and broadcast equipment over the years.
