Is it neccessary to commercialize innovation ?

Even if you don't need money, patenting an innovation would establish that you were really responsible for this innovation and that there was really a significant innovation. If an innovation was not patented then somebody else might patent your innovation and exploit it commercially and claim credit. Any real innovation is likely to involve some kind of investment by you or your financial backers so you may need to recoup costs involved.
