Is it misleading for fast food restaurants to use models to endorse their product? Should the government regulate such depictions?

When I watch commercials for Carl's Jr. I can't help but be annoyed. The company is using incredible sexy, fit personalities to sell their ridiculously unhealthy, fat/sodium/calorie filled products like triple-meat-triple-cheese-burgers. Much like the government banning "Joe Camel" for making cigarettes look cool, should the government also ban heart-attack-inducing fast food restaurants from using models to make their products seem healthier than they actually are?

Wow, you jumped a pretty big chasm from your premise to your conclusion. You initially state that a company is using sexy women to sell a product. Then you imply the inherent beauty of the models intentionally misrepresents the product (As if to say that using a robot or some other non-sexually arousing thing would make unhealthy aspect of the product so much more apparent). Since this is basically your argument, that sexy models misrepresent the product they sell, why not ban sexy models from selling any and everything?

Personally, when I first saw these ads, after feeling moderate annoyance, I chuckled because i thought they were so silly. They are clearly supposed to make people so inclined really hungry. I don't really beleive that anyone would think the burgers are great diet food just because some skinny models ate a bite. And I also hope not too many people think these models actually eat this stuff on a regular basis. They probably had to go vegan for a month after filming these.

I honestly don't think it's really a big deal. It seems like a bigger issue to me that we have the luxury of eating these huge meals and getting fat while people all over the world are dying of starvation.

Plus, since burgers aren't illegal for anyone to have, the case is not similar to the smoking ad bans. There isn't really a way you can say these ads endanger anyone's health. They're not geared towards kids, so anyone they would influence would be an adult perfectly capable of making an informed and intelligent decision, whereas the smoking ads made impressionable children, who are not legally deemed old enough to make informed decisions, want to buy cigarettes.

I think smoking and burgers are in completely different ballparks.

I think the real issue now days, this is not just fast food restaurants that does this, is using the term 0 grams trans fat to make foods sound healthier. It could be very misleading to someone who didn't read labels or didn't know any better.

Since these models are NOT advertising a triple-meat-triple-cheese-burgers, but a grilled Teriyaki (low fat) chicken breast sandwich with what appears to be lettuce, tomato, pineapple and onion on a sauceless bun (notice -unfortunately- none of the usual Carl's Jr. drippings), and a cranberry, apple walnut chicken salad, I don't see your point. Maybe they are a bit high in sodium and the bun could be whole grain, but outside of that hard for them to be any healthier, now flavorful is another thing entirely!

You're right. It is completely backwards! These girls should be advertising cigarettes (which help you stay thin), and cigarette mascots (like the ever-popular cowboy) should be advertising hamburgers.

You're wrong to invoke the government to do it, though. The U.S. government brought suit against Joe Camel for making cigarettes popular with young children, for whom cigarettes are illegal. I don't think using supermodels will make pre-pubescent children care any more about hamburgers, especially compared to the clowns and cartoons we already have. Also, there's the minor difference that hamburgers aren't actually illegal for children to buy.

WAH!!! I'm a fat lazy slob who can't control myself and eat a healthy meal. WAH!!! The hot chicks eating burgers are forcing me to go buy the biggest fattest artery clogginest burger they have and eat the whole thing in one sitting along with a giant box of fries that were fried in FAT and drink a gallon of sugar filled soda. WAH!!!

Idiots!! You know it's bad for you. It doesn't matter who is selling it. Don't do it. You know what you should do. Get off your lazy ass and cook yourself a healthy meal, maybe get some exercise and walk to the store to buy the ingredients before hand. Have a little self control and take some f*****g responsibility for your own body.

I think it would be better to show what they do after they eat this type of food, which is to BARF!
They should show the normal, average, everyday overweight person which is where the bulk of fast food customers come from. Well....maybe not because then they would have less customers.
The salad commercial would be more like it though.

I think the bigger picture here is not whether the food is healthy....we all know it is not and these girls don't eat this or they would not have flat stomachs and the super clear complexions. The bigger picture is that every where we look we are using sex, girls in next to nothing, with big boobs, etc. Then we wonder why we have girls having sex at younger ages, constantly using their bodies to get what they want. We have young girls hating their bodies, getting plastic surgery when they are teenagers all to try to fill this mold of what sexy is that we have created. We have woman that hate their bodies and are always trying to keep up, spending thousands of dollars every year on Botox, etc. We have shows like the one where they catch men going to meet young girls that they met on the internet. It's a vicious cycle. We can complain all day about the problems of the world or we can realize the things that are causing them and stop doing it.

I don't think the sexy models are there to make you think the food is healthy, because we all know by now that it isn't. It's soft-core porn, using sex as a marketing tool. I find these commercials inappropriate, especially for businesses that cater to families.

People eat a lot of unhealthy food at home, too.

Why are sexy models often used to market some item(s)? Is the focus really on the item or is the focus more on sex? Advertise healthy foods on their own merit rather than using sex as an appeal to encourage the eating of healthy foods. Aha!

Oh, yes, I do think it's completely misleading to use models in the fast food restaurants' advertisements. It is even more misleading to see them eating a huge juicy burger or fries. I think that once the fast food restaurants are required to put nutritional labeling on all of their meals, the tides may turn a little bit. People will be shocked to see how many calories are in their regular lunch.

NO! People have the choice to go there or not. Just because they use hot models doesn't mean that they are false advertising or anything bad like that. They are appealing to men. Besides the government can't ban everything, at some point you have to know that.
