Why is it less risky to purchase a business than start one? How can I discern if I am better off starting a company than buying one due to risks?

To a certain extent and in many cases, yes, it is less risky to purchase an existing business rather than starting a new one. This however depends on how successful the business is before you purchase it and how you operate it. Simply purchasing any business does not mean you will be successful. If the business is scraping by, losing money or otherwise failing before you get involved, common sense says you will probably struggle and possibly lose money on the venture. Similarly, if you purchase a thriving business and fail to continue the success, don't expect great things. On the other hand, purchasing a successful business and keeping it up to that level, or making it grow further, you could have a great deal. It's all up to various factors as to if purchasing a company is better than starting your own, each of which will be based on the specific company you are considering and how you operate the business after it's in your hands.
