Is it legal to tow a vehicle that does not have a license plate?

We are moving from Florida to Indiana. We just bought a vehicle but it would be a waste of money to tag the van here in Florida then have to turn around and do that again in Indiana. We are driving a Penske truck with our belongings and plan to tow our van on one of their tow dolly's where the two front wheels are up on the dolly and the rear wheels "drag", hence exposing where the license plate should be.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

If you have tow trailer or dolly that has a license plate on it, you don't need a license plate.

We have a tow dolly, and it has it's own license plate. If you have a car trailer, it will be registered and have tags on it.

Once the vehicle is on the car trailer, it's considered cargo. It would be a different story if it wasn't our vehicle and for hire.

The problem your running into is, the Penske truck isn't owned by you.

I would guess that the law would apply just the same, but I personally would check, considering that the Truck that is doing the towing does not belong to you.

I suggest you contact to Highway Patrol in FLA and ask them this question. It's too open a question as the laws can vary from state to state. I'll bet there's a temporary tag that you can buy for just a few dollars that would be good for say 72hours or something.

License plate is necessary for any vehicle. Driving a vehicle without any license plate is illegal task. We all know that sometimes it seems there are just to many laws, but also we are glad that most of these laws exist because they are protecting us from harm.
