Is it important to keep hand sanitizer around when someone owns a lizard as a pet?

I used to have a Mali Uromastics lizard as a pet and she died about five years ago. We called her Molly (or Mali) since it seemed like such a good fit. I remember being told to wash or sanitize my hands after touching her to take her out of her habitat or to feed her. I always did for fear that I would get some strange and unknown disease from forgetting to do this and accidentally touching my face after coming in contact with my lizard. Is there any validity to this precaution? What makes it necessary to clean your hands after handling a lizard? Does this apply to just certain lizards, or all? What could have happen if I had forgotten to comply with this rule? What is it about lizards that make them different from other pets? Is there something on their skin that is hazardous to humans? Or should I be sanitizing after coming into contact with any pet?

This is Molly and my kittie, Vincent!

Is there any validity to this precaution?
- yes reptiles including lizards carry salmonella among other diseases.

What makes it necessary to clean your hands after handling a lizard?
- lizards carry diseases on their skin, one would want to wash to keep from contracting any diseases from the lizard.

Does this apply to just certain lizards, or all?
- one should always be cautious as any lizard may or may nor be carrying a disease.

What could have happen if I had forgotten to comply with this rule?
- you could contract a disease like salmonella (salmonellosis)

What is it about lizards that make them different from other pets?
- well.. their lizards, but one should be safe and clean with all pets.

Is there something on their skin that is hazardous to humans? Or should I be sanitizing after coming into contact with any pet?
- salmonella could be on their skin so with safety in mind one should always be washing one hands. the risk of contracting a disease as a keeper of a lizard as a pet increases this risk so additional precautions should be taken, like the usage of hand sanitizer after touching the lizard.

Yes, all reptiles carry salmonella, which can make you very sick if you get infected. If you touch a lizard which has salmonella on it's skin and then you put your fingers in or near your mouth, you can become infected. This is why it's important to wash your hands (or use hand sanitizer) after handling a lizard or doing any work inside their enclosure.

There is no reason to fear the animals because of this, however. It's completely safe to have lizards as pets as long as you follow some basic health practices. And I currently own a mali uromastyx :)
