Is it helpful or disrespectful (to the remains) to conduct CT scans and DNA analyses on a 3300 year old mummy (Tutankhamun) to determine...

... the cause of his death and what other health conditions and ailments may have affected the young king?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

When dealing with the death of people it's hard to determine what disrespectful means - funerals, flowers, memorials, etc are all for the family left behind. The people who loved the person who passed away are consoling themselves by doing the last remaining thing that they are able to do for their loved one...and that's memorialize them. But the fact of the matter is, the person who is dead doesn't give two shakes about what kind of funeral arrangements were made or how many people cried for them. Those things are really only for the ones left behind.

Young King Tut probably doesn't have a lot of people still about mourning his death. And so no one; including Tut, is going to worry with the testis, studies or analysis that are being done.

Considering that the testing that will be done will be done carefully and I'm certain with great respect, it's in no way disrespectful.

In fact, it's helpful as it gives us the history of Tut and in a sense all the people of that time. Their story dies with them if the facts and truths are not examined and searched for. In my mind, this offers much more disrespect to the people of this ancient civilization than any CT scan or DNA analysis that could be done on the remains of the mummy.

It is no more disrespectful then removing him from his burial place to tour the world on display.

So very true. Disturbance is disturbance -- and being on display actually seems more disrespectful now that I think of it!

It helps to know that the people that willbe doing the tests will do them with caution and will not damage the King any more than necessary. It is good to learn what happened to people so long ago. It is important to know details of his life and death and they are already finding out such good information.
I really do not find it disrespectful.
