Is Naproxen harmful to pregnant women?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Naproxen is a pregnancy class C drug, meaning animal testing has shown it causes harm to animal fetuses, but there hasn't been enough human testing to indicate how dangerous (or not) it might be to human fetuses. What testing has been done has given doctors enough cause to say that this drug should be avoided during pregnancy if at all possible, particularly in the 3rd trimester.

The main issue with late term pregnancies is that the drug may cause a premature closing of the ductus arteriosus (which is a serious cardiovascular problem). The drug may also cause issues during delivery relating to uterine contractility . There's a run-down of other possible pregnancy issues in the Merk Manual (see the 1st link below), if you'd like to read more. Basically, don't take this medicine during pregnancy unless your doctor tells you to.

Yes, an article that appeared in August 2006 in the Journal Birth Defects Researched said that pregnant women who take NSAIDs including naproxen in the first 3 months of pregnancy can increase their risk of having a child with congenital birth defect specifically heart anomalies.

The answer is yes. Any medicine will do harm to pregnant women. So you'd better choose other ways to regain your health.
