Is it fashionable for a woman to wear a man's shirt?

Can a woman wear a man's shirt and still look in style? Does the style of a button down shirt for a man look similar to that of a woman? Are the buttons always on the opposite side of the shirt for a man?

Tailored fashions are always in style. They're one of the most classic looks for both men and women, and button-down collared shirts are versatile pieces that can be dressed up or dressed down, worn simple and chic or used more as a base for extreme expression. The difference between men and women's shirts extends far beyond the the buttons, which are always on different sides for a male shirt verses a woman's.

Women's blouses have darts to fit the unique curves of the female torso. There are quite a range of styles and designs that utilize darts, most of which allow for the fabric to release at the bust, move inward towards the waist, and extend at the bottom hem towards the hip. Also, men's tailored shirts are typically larger than women's, more specifically in regards to bodice length as well as sleeve length.

But despite these design differences, the gender divide between menswear and womenswear has become incredibly blurred. The last decade has shown menswear to be a huge fashion trend for women, from vests and trouser-style pants to the classic button-down.

Pair a simple white button-down designed for a man with black leggings and heels for a great, stylish look that utilizes the extra length of the shirt. If you borrow from the boys, be sure to add feminine details in the shoes, jewelry, or in some other aspect of the ensemble to balance the look.

Here are some great sites that talk about the menswear trend and how to wear it:

having been suit-and-tie for years, I've always found menswear buttons, especiaally for button-down shirts, to be on the right.

Women can wear a man's shirt with jeans and look great.

This one has the buttons switched to make it womenswear, but read the description:

"My note: WhoWhatWear Daily thinks this looks like a "walk of shame," but I think men's shirts are incredibly sexy. "We love this look, while normally reserved for the day after walks of shame, Rag & Bone gave us the feel of a man's oversized shirt tailored for a woman.""

They can also be incredibly cute as...for lack of a better word, lingerie.

I can't exactly explain it...just look.
