Is it fair to give kids weird names?

Sure, there are the old classics that just aren't fun to have on the playground (Ezekiel, for instance), but some people just seem to be aiming for weird. Is it fair for parents to do this? Should they be stopped? Could they be stopped? http://www.momversation.com/blog/top-ten-weirdest-baby-names

Its not fair to the kids. My sister and I had normal enough names and we were teased... give a kid a not so normal name and there is just one more reason to tease them. While not every kid with a wacky name will be teased, many will, if not as kids, later as teens...

Cute or unique spelling is annoying too, the poor kid will have to go through life trying to explain the spelling or pronouciation of their name for eternity.

BUT WORST OF ALL.. my sister works in Mental Health, she should know all this.. what was she thinking?

I feel these unique and weird names (as you call them) are a reflection on the parents need for attention and serve no purpose for the child.

Ha ha this always makes me think of Frank Zappa's kids Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet Emuukha Rodan and Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen! ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Zappa )

You know what, I think it's odd but I also think it could make or break the child. Dweezil for example, come on, that guy must be either a complete mess or the 'strongest' guy around....maybe in the celebrity circle it isn't so hard to cope with, since celebrities aren't suppose to be normal right ???

Now when I was looking for a few names to answer this I came across a post by a girl called Azure, a normal person not a celebrity.

She said
"I would just like to say that half of the names on this page aren't even strange. I mean I grew up with the name Azure Blue. Not that I'm complaining b/c being common sucks"

So for her it was great having a strange name, it made her 'uncommon' and she sounds like she made it through OK :)

I wouldn't do it but I can see it's not always bad......you can always change it anyway :)

It depends how weird the name is. If you remember Johnny Cash's "A boy named Sue", you will hardly find it funny if you were that boy. :) "Get tough or die" is a great parenting approach but it is not the most civilized one. Btw, the song is humorous but in reality it is not funny when your name is ridiculed by the rest.

When I named my first son Torsten Wilhelm I got a lot of guff on the subject.. people kept saying eww that's weird,, he'll get teased blah blah blah.. and you know what? Now that he has the name people keep telling me how damn cool it is. (for the record Torsten is not an uncommon name outside of the US lol) Personally I would rather have an unusual name that stuck in people's minds or that had meaning than a common name (Torsten's full name translate to: "The Hammer of Thor to Protect the People" :D )

I should also note that no matter what name you give a child other children will find a way to make fun of it. Amanda has been one of the top 10 female names in America I don't know how many times.. and I got teased lots for my name as a child.

In short, I think it perfectly fair.

As a side note: My husband actually suggested Adolph for our current bun in the oven lol Before the man who killed millions, the name was actually a good one of strong Germanic decent.

Quote-
ADOLF

Gender: Masculine

Usage: German, Dutch, Scandinavian, Czech, Ancient Germanic

Pronounced: AH-dawlf (German) key
From the Germanic name Adalwolf, which meant "noble wolf" from the Germanic elements adal "noble" and wulf. It was borne by several Swedish kings as a first or second name, most notably by Gustav II Adolf in the 17th century. Association with Adolf Hitler (1889-1945), the leader of the Nazi party in Germany during World War II, has lessened the use of this name.

This may be an odd response, but if you are going to give your child a name, then why is it often followed by, "Of course we'll call him/her..." and then a nickname? I've been plagued for a lifetime by people who insist on chopping my name, right off the bat, and then frequently having to bring the point home to the extent that someone is embarrassed.

Name the kid. Stick to the name. I think I'd avoid "Blanket," but are they calling him "Blankie" for short??? Celebrities are less at risk, but woe be unto the kid whose mom thought "Chandelier" sounded cool and inventive. Stop inventing. Please. "Channel" sounds nice too, but what future is in store for her? These are probably not the worst examples and the answer to the question is No! It is not fair to give kids weird names. It is self-indulgent, selfish, and uncaring.

No, it isn't fair. If you have a really weird name, or one for the wrong gender, or something like that, you might be able to pull it off if you're a confident person. But as a parent, you don't know that. You don't know that your little Jagger Axe is going to turn out to be a confident person who can pull it off instead of a mousy bully-magnet. So it's best to use something that's, you know, an actual name.

I'm a stickler about baby names, though. If it isn't legitimate, you shouldn't be using it. Period. If you absolutely must, put it in the middle where it can be hidden.

Cherise is my real first name, and I am really happy with it. I have been able to count the number of people I have heard of in my 46 years who have the same name (37). It is really nice knowing when someone says my name, they are for sure talking to me. I wouldn't like having a common name like Susan or Carol, and hearing it every other time someone shouted out at an event. That said, Cherise is a name. I do not think I would enjoy being named something stupid like Moon Unit.

A name is a label that a child carries throughout his life (at least until he/she's old enough to legally change it) and parents should give their kids reasonable names! If it's an unusual or uncommon name, that's not so bad as long as it's a real name! The child usually ends up with a nickname, anyway. But making up names or naming them after luxury automobiles or the like is just pretentious and silly.

I suppose parents should be allowed to name their kids whatever they want, within reason. I do remember hearing a story not too long ago about a couple who wanted to name their child Adolph Hitler (Whatever, I don't remember the last name), which certainly could mark the child for life! A court wouldn't allow it, with good reason.

I think that naming our children is a great responsibility. We are giving them a part of their identity and should do so with a little sense of caution, but most importantly meaning.
If you name your child Joe, but Joe has so much meaning to you and your family, then it was the perfect choice. If you name your child Goofball, just because you thought it was funny, maybe you should think about that a bit first.

I named my son Joshua. Ok, I know. It's a very common name. However, when i was pregnant, what else could I do but watch a LOT of TV. One day I was watching the Ten Commandments. The old one. And I was watching the part that referred to Joshua. He was strong, courageous, compassionate and kind. As I was watching I thought about the type of man I would like my son to be. That was it. It was decided that day. It wasn't because I picked it out of a baby name book, but because it had an impact on me.

I think that most parents that choose crazy and outlandish names for their children are attention seeking. I only hope the children find the humor in it, and embrace their uniqueness.
