Is it compulsory to give tip other users?

Tip for best answer: M$0.72
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It is not compulsory in general. However, it furthers the business model of Mahalo, so they have made it a requirement to have tipped at least M$50 to be eligible for a brown belt, and at least M$100 to be eligible for a black belt. According to Mahalo Belts:

- quote -
HOW TO EARN YOUR BROWN BELT

8,000 points indicates you are ready for brown belt, this is the Mahalo Elite. You don't automatically get your brown belt, you first need to pass a test conducted by the Mahalo Staff, you can see some of the tests conducted here.

Mahalo users are subjected to the test because of the advance editing options that become available to you as a brown belt. Mahalo expects brown belts to become the elite users who will essentially be real examples of what it means to be the best type of user on Mahalo. In order to pass your brown belt test, you will need to be experienced in Page Management and have had some approved Mahalo Tasks. You will also need to contribute at least M$50 in "Tips" within Mahalo Answers. You can find this information under "Tips Given" on your profile page.

HOW TO EARN YOUR BLACK BELT

Black Belts represent the very best that Mahalo has to offer, period. They are the true champions of the community in every respect, and they are essential to shaping and representing the community at large. In order to possess such a high honor, you must truly stand out among the masses and, much like brown belts, you must pass a test hosted and conducted by Mahalo staff. Black belts go out of their way to help new users within the site, often by hanging out in the Mahalo Answers Community in order to assist new or struggling users. Mahalo's elite possess high best answer percentage ratios, an impressive number of 'helpful' votes, and are often responsible for recruiting talented new users and writers to the Mahalo community.

Black belts are also among the most generous of all users, as black belt candidates must contribute at least M$100 in "Tips" within Mahalo Answers before they are eligible to don the Ebony Sash of Glory.
- end quote -

No speeches my friend, just the hope that your disappointment and frustration will pass and that we will continue to enjoy your presence on Mahalo (not being facetious here).

"it furthers the business model of Mahalo, so they have made it a requirement "

...and some of us, Mahalo veterans, that took more time to reach the level are paying the penalty now requiring to tip up to M$ 50 or $100 to get the coveted belts. On the other hand, most of late entrants that reached the belts in less time, passed earlier without this requirement. Way to go for "fair implementation" of the rule by overlooking some of us old time share, expertise and handicap.

S... happens, eh? Lets see how beautiful the Top Members section is gonna look with my everlasting purple spot in the middle of 20.000 and 30.000 black gurus in the not so distant future. ¿Quite a statement for Mahalo fairness?

Yeah, frustration and disappointment... "don't ask what your community can do for you but what you can do for the community"... 3.400 points overdue, past Brown Belt and 8.000 voted Answers.... ¿Is that what I can do for the community or I'm asking to much? (save the adapt or leave speech)

I'm gonna tell you a little yoke:

A man sees a restaurant with the sign "We prepare any food you could possible imagine"...
The guy enters the place.
Takes the menu and finds nothing interesting.
Calls the waitress.. "Could you prepare me an Elephant's Ear Sandwich?"
She responds.. "I'm gonna ask the Chef and see what can we do for ya"
After a minute she comes back...
"Sorry Sir, we run out off bread buns"

¿Catch my drift?

Take care.

Thanks for the praise and congratulations @pixelsilva. While I understand your frustration, having personally experienced something very similar a few weeks ago, note that your own words don't support your bitter complaints:

- "That M$ money that I supposedly own is just a mirage, I can't cash it out because PayPal does not work in my country"
- "You´ll see. I will reach M$ 50 and nothing will happen, and a new stupid rule will be placed in order to stop the ranks. Mahalo is not interested in more Black Belts... congratulations on your Black Belt!"

My friend, if they did not want more black belts, why would they have awarded me one just yesterday? Mahalo does make changes, sometimes more rapidly than members are comfortable with, always with the intention of increasing the success of the site. This means that you need to adjust your participation to the new rules if you want to continue succeeding - the online version of "adapt or perish" only in this case, it's adapt or leave.

Also, since you cannot cash out, why would you be so opposed to using your M$ to tip or to fund questions on Mahalo? That's what e.g. @buddawiggi does all the time with all his M$s, even though he could cash them out if he chose to. I confess this is not the case for me, but if I could not cash out, and did not feel like participating with no compensation, I'd simply leave Mahalo. Each member has to choose, based on his/her specific situation, what (if anything) they'd like to do on Mahalo.

In any case, I hope you find a modus vivendi here that works for you, despite the changes. I truly believe you can do so once you step past your frustration and disappointment.

Yes, I don't mind the tipping. In fact, I was totally unaware of the trend, because I never ask Questions... ignorance on my part, until @coreymac notified me with his subtle touch about this new M$50-$100 rule (??)... so, it was unexpected for me. "..You cannot advance until you gave out some of your M$ in return...”

So, you could imagine my surprise when I was subtly notified that I was not worthy of the belt because the stupid tipping thing (that only matters... to you know who). I was equally screwed my friend, because I have built my little M$ amount by Answering M$0.25 Questions, cent by cent, all the way to some lousy M$280 which is just peanuts compared with most... That M$ money that I supposedly own is just a mirage, I can't cash it out because PayPal does not work in my country, on top of that you get only 75% of the real money because the other 25% is "lost in translation", and lately we´ve been asked to return back M$50 to M$100 of our well deserved money, which took some of us sweat, tears and blood to achieve, again by participating in a site that seemed designed to only benefit monetarily the same person that promotes "Show us your Mahalo spirit", and thru a magnifying glass is stigmatizing everybody lately "to see who was positive and open to change and who was negative".

Well, it seems that in the eyes of Mahalo I was behaving like "one of the negatives" since all my 404 Answers, 325 Best Answers, 80% efficiency, and with thousands of Answers voted (perhaps the largest of any Mahalo user this year) is not enough to fill its high standards. So, I kind of lost my faith in the system. ¿They want the tipping? Well... there you have the tipping. I gonna behave like a good boy by tipping as requested, but I don't really believe all that is true. You´ll see. I will reach M$ 50 and nothing will happen, and a new stupid rule will be placed in order to stop the ranks. Mahalo is not interested in more Black Belts. Sooner or later they are gonna drop the whole scheme out of the window. Not caring if they let us run after a rainbow that some (or most) of us, will not be allow to reach.

...aaah, I forgot @opher, congratulations on your Black Belt! It was well deserved. I always looked to your Answers which were very insightful. Well done.

The fairness or lack thereof are a matter of personal opinion.

When this new tipping requirement was announced, it was after I had already reached the 13,000 point threshold, so I thought it should have been grand-fathered, or else at least phased in. However, we are all playing in Mahalo's sandbox, so they get to make the rules, and change them at will.

What we can count on is that Mahalo will do what they perceive is best to build up the site, its traffic, and its revenue. For Mahalo members this means our best bet is to make sure our interests and those of Mahalo align, at which point we benefit from most Mahalo changes. Just look at the recent Best Answer and Question Rev Share as an example. Members who provide more BA's and more Q's get the benefit of a Mahalo-initiated change in the business model.

As for the required tipping, if you decide to give back say 10% - 20% of your Mahalo income as tips (including especially tipped questions that have a good chance of making back even more than you invested in them via rev share), you can get to the M$50 threshold in a few months. I was able to go from M$20 to M$115 tips given in 3 weeks, though I've been lucky with good pages, good rev share, and high tips, which is why I say months instead of weeks for many Mahaloians. Good luck and don't despair!

hey.. what editing privileges do we get? I didn't know we got anything but a pretty new belt.

I think that was historically true, but was revoked at some point without the Mahalo Belts text being updated accordingly.

No, it is not compulsory. Giving of tips to other users is when other users find your question or comment interesting. Just like what other Mahalo users are doing now and as you can see below your question (tips increase). Keep posting interesting questions!

It is nice but not compulsory.

However to move up the Brown belt here one would have to have given back to the community at least 50 Mahalo dollars and to move up to Black belt one would have to given at least 100 Mahalo Dollars back to the community. I guess you could say it is compulsory to tip other users either directly or indirectly if your objective is to attain these belt levels.

We are considering making it mandatory for logged in users to put a small tip (say. 01, .02, .05) on a question at some point. Since we are giving folks M$5 in tips over the first five belt levels that means it will be easy to afford.

Also, we are going to give folks .01-.07 every day they login (it will probably be random... like a slot machine!), so that would offset it as well.

This should not be tied to the action of logging in, as many members (such as me) don't log out at all.

Also, would the requirement be per day? If so, what if a member is logged in but not active? Is it per month? Per payout request?

Not compulsary but is a nice way to recognize a good question and answer. If an answer has helped you in some way, or a question hais asked that helped you with something ofr even if it just peeked your interests, why not tip !!

I was just discussing the log-in bit with one of my VMs. Unless I wipe my whole "history," which I rarely do, I'm logged in 24/7. I'm on this site around the clock in various capacities. My prior incentive for logging in was a point. Now a point and 75% of a penny...this changes things.

Oh, I almost forgot - no, it is not compulsory to tip other users. But if I'm going to provide a good answer to a good question, I think it's good karma to tip the asker of the question. Like you.
