Is it better to make your own trail mix or buy it from the store?
Does store-bought trail mix have extra ingredients that are unhealthy? How can you make sure your homemade trail mix is healthy?

Health and nutrition are major priorities for most responsible adults. But then again, it can sometimes be difficult to juggle healthy eating with all the other vital aspects of your daily life - family, friends, relationships, job, chores, school...whatever it may be. so often times convenient snacks are much more conducive towards our busy lives. But are your on-the-go food choices good for you?
It's relatively easy to spot the junk food options that are grab-and-go choices, from chips to candy bars to cookie packs. But what about the other options that seem healthy? Trail mix, granola/granola bars often promote themselves as healthy convenience food. Some are and some are certainly not.
A vast majority of the brand name products are laden with unnecessary fat and sugar. Trail mix in it's nature is a calorie-dense food and the major ingredient is typically nuts, a high healthy-fat food. So why do companies coat their mixes with added sugar and fat? So that basically a candy mix can be called good for you. Now this isn't the case with all of them. If your searching for truly healthy trail mix, check the ingredients. Nuts, dried and UNsweetened fruits are great, so are seeds, whole grains, etc. Avoid anything with added sugar or oils and find brands that opt for baking ingredients (if applicable) verses frying.
Making your own is a great way to avoid a not-so-smart pick at your grocery store. You not only can tailor the ingredients to suit your personal preference, health goals, etc. but you can also control and know for sure what is in your snack. Additionally, it's generally much cheaper and you'll be saving the environment by avoiding excess packaging! So making your own ahead if time may be a little more work, but I certainly think that's the way to go.
