Is it better to have a catchy business name or one that is straight and to the point?

Picking the perfect name is arguably an important step of starting a business, but what is better in the long run, a catchy unique name or one that makes it clear what the business does? I'm sure now common names like Google and Amazon years ago make people sit and wonder exactly what the companies provided, but they (obviously) caught on and became very successful. On the other hand, a name like Waffle House pretty much tells a customer that they can go there for waffles. Which method is best?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I would pick both if I could. My opinion on names was brought to its present state after I read the book Freakonomics. It would be more difficult to have both a catchy name and a straight to the point name than to have just one of them, but it is not impossible. I do not know the story behind the Amazon name, but it can be seen as both catchy and straight to the point. For instance, you would never know what you will find in the Amazon forest. As people become more concerned about the environment, they might think more positively about the brand name Amazon. About Google, I think it paved way for Web 2.0 names. Traditional names became less available, and it became okay to sport creative names as long as the business delivers something of value. I have heard of The Denim Shop, which sells not only jeans. Another freakonomic brand I can think of is Shoe Mart or SM. Some of the largest shopping malls in the world take the SM name. There was a time when Toyota, Samsung, Hyundai, Asus and HTC didn't equate with quality, but through competitive products, these names have become catchy and straight to the point. So maybe Shakespeare was right.

Hi @Angie!

This is the common dilemma of entrepreneurs that is looking for the perfect name for their business. This process can be stressful. You should keep in mind that the name you choose for you business is one that should last and embody both your values and you company's unique characteristics.
I found this very interesting and helpful guide for you so that you will be able to choose the best business name that is search-friendly and recognizable:

1. Choose a name that lends itself to wordplay since it will help carry over into its other marketing and verbal branding.
2. Choose a strong name and it should be simple. It should be one that is easy to spell and pronounce and meaningful as well.
3. Don't use pun for this will put your company name at risk.
4. Avoid being a copy cat.
