Is it better to get my hair colored at a salon?

How does Clairol and other home hair coloring kits stack up to salon coloring? Does salon hair coloring last longer than home coloring kits?
Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Home hair coloring kits are a cheap way to color your hair as opposed to salon coloring. If you are looking for the perfect color, and for your hair to come out great then go to a salon. Most times you don't get the perfect result using home hair coloring kits.

I really liked Feria for a box color. But I have since switched to a less-toxic brand, because of some skin reactions I had to box dyes.
If you're going to color your hair for the first time, it is well worth the money to have a professional consultation to choose the best color formula for you. Then you can maintain your color at home with a box dye, and return to the salon every few months. Just ask lots of questions at the salon about their recommendations, maintenance, and how to protect your hair and scalp from damage.
I definitely recommend looking for box dyes at health food stores or online, that do not contain ammonia or other harmful chemicals, and include more herbal ingredients. It's much better for your health and the environment, especially if you're going to dye at home.
Good luck!

I have been coloring my hair myself for many years now and I have been very happy with the results. I have always used the brand leaders like L'Oreal, Revlon, Clairol etc and I have found them to be long lasting, easy to use and they leave my hair in great condition.

In an ideal world, I reckon most of us would trot off to the hairdressers, let a professional help us choose a suitable shade, then have it all done for us. Once every few weeks we would return to have the roots re-touched and the only effort we would have to make is to sit in the chair while it is done!

The problem is for most of us, the cost, if I can achieve the results that I do with home kits, I am not going to spend more money than I can afford at a salon, however tempting the thought may be.
