Is it alcoholism if you keep drinking as much as you did in college after you GRADUATE?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Hello, Never went to college but I think I did qualify as a serious drinker. I could wake up and go straight to the beer.

The only person who can answer your question is you. Let me help you get to the conclusion.

If you cannot stop drinking on your own without intervention, you have a problem.

If people are talking about your drinking, you have a problem.

If you drink only to get drunk, you have a problem.

I actually considered going to a clinic here in my city and staying for a month program, to stop drinking. On my way to tell my boss, a car passed me with the following bumper sticker. "GOD is bigger than any problem I have." Strange as this may sound, I never drank after that and didn't need the clinic.

Go through the list above asking these things honestly and say to your self, why not just not drinking for today, and see if today can turn into tomorrow without a drink. If that works see how long you can go, if you can do it without sweating or wanting to kill someone then see how long you can go without a drink.

You will find that going through life without being in a daze can have it's challenges but so what, feel the fear but do it anyway.

I wish you well and would be very interested in knowing how you do.

Be Well.

That would depend on how much you drank in college. Continuing heavy drinking may well be a sign of alcoholism. I've also seen those who continue to drink and party because they just don't want to grow up and take responsibility for adult living. Most of us are unable to be gainfully employed in the "real world" and drink heavily on a regular basis.

If anyone has a friend who continues to drink a lot after graduating from college, help them to get counseling. Anyone who is drinking heavily at that age is bound to end up getting DUIs, losing jobs, alienated from spouse and kids, being in poor health, and dying early.

I don't think a person is an alcoholic or even has a drinking problem just because they are questioning what they do. Ther term "alcoholic" is thrown around way to much.

In fact, as far as the mental health profession is concerned, the definition of having any type of addiction or mental illness at all is defined by how it affects your life. If you have trouble funcitioning to your optimum potential every day because of a chemical, then you have a problem.

Now, just because you can function now doesn't mean you're always going to be able to. While questioning if you are an alcoholic does not mean that you actually are one, is it realy necessary to be there before you stop? I'm not addicted to caffeine, but I don't like the way it makes me feel so I avoid it.

Personally, I would say that if you are drinking more now than you previously did, whether you just got out of college or whatever, then maybe it's time to make the choice of whether or not you WANT to be an alcoholic, regardless of whether you already are or not. If you aren't now, you certainly have the potential to be. Why stress yourself? Just make it a moot point.

That is totally rubbish. I don't think that is alcoholism unless you experience withdrawal symptoms and regular blackouts.

There's an idea, lets encourage him to keep drinking until he's falling off the couch, blacking out and having withdrawal symptoms. A person really only needs to get to the point where they are questioning their own drinking habits and at that point it's probably a good sign to try and go without for a while just to see if you can. There's more to life then getting smashed at every opportunity.

If after cutting my grass in the hot sun for a hour and a half I can have 1 cold beer and call it quits after they way I use to drink I would say I don't have a drinking problem. But if I drink 4 beers, then there's no stopping me until I'm falling down drunk. So why even have 1.

Be Well.
