Is it advisable to shop online or shop offline?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Both have their own advantages and disadvantages. When you shop online, it provides you opportunity to compare prices and go for the lowest price. It is good when you want to buy Camera, iPod, Cell Phone or something that you have already seen and know how it will be when you receive that.

It is not very good if you want to buy Clothing, Jewellery or something that you are not sure how it wud be when u wear them.

Shopping online is fine provided you do you research and know who you are buying things from. Using payment services like PayPal can also make things a little safer. What I usually do is do the research in my local store so that I can get an up-close look at the product and get an idea of the standard retail price - then I go find out if I can get it cheaper online.

So I guess, I would say a nice mixture of both is pretty good.

Shopping online is nice when you find deals with free shipping or low shipping costs. I was looking for a screen cover for my iPhone and there were alot of cheap ones but then they want to charge $8-15 for shipping..lol I'll just go to the Dollar Store and get one for 10cents

Other than that though there are a alot of awesome deals out there you just need to look around and not just settle for the first deal you find

I like a combination of both. I shop brick and mortar stores if there are good sales. I like the instant gratification. It's nice if you can buy something and take it home, no waiting for delivery. Another advantage of B&M is that you can feel textures, see colors and try things on. I prefer B&M for big or bulky items, too.

Online, on the other hand, has the advantage of convenience. You can shop at 3:00 AM in your pajamas, if you want. Sometimes the online venue of a store will have sales before the B&M version, especially near a big holiday, just as they often have web only specials. And there are some odd types of items you can only get online.

When I shop online, I like to get as much bang for my buck as possible. That means I'll use a rewards program like MyPoint or Memolink, where I get points for dollars spent online. Point are redeemable for cash or gift cards. I use a site like RetailMeNot or DealTaker to find discount codes, especially free shipping, for the particular store. Finally, I pay with a credit card that also gives me points. I get the lowest price I can plus points, so I can buy more stuff!

I'd say it depends on your needs. Either way, stick with reputable merchants. And for online, it doesn't hurt to use a credit card that gives you single use card numbers.

If you need reliability, shop in a brick and mortar store. You're better guaranteed that the person can be found later, if needed.

Many online retailers suffer more from a "market for lemons" problem caused when buyers can't be certain of the merchandise quality until after they buy the merchandise. http://gadgets.boingboing.net/2008/09/27/ebay-the-market-for.html

Buying from a specific U.S. retailer (non-auction) online which has a reputation you trust would alleviate much of the problem.

If you don't need something *now*, shopping online tends to be drastically cheaper.

Does it come with more risks? Not particularly, as long as you go to an online store that won't screw you over. A good web site to see if an online retailer is good is http://www.resellerratings.com

As an example of the kinds of savings, here are a couple electronics items, price compared between Best Buy and Newegg, a very popular online computer/electronics store:

Best Buy: On sale for $170 with a 1GB flash card
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8742239&st=sd1100is&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1202648739174

Newegg: $150 for the camera, or $170 with an 8GB flash card and a case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16830120253

If you look through the sites more and compare more things, you will find that online stores tend to be significantly cheaper on many different kinds of items, though a sale at a brick and mortar place will frequently match a common online price.

Some other good sites to shop online from, though frankly there are loads of good ones:

amazon.com
buy.com
bhphotovideo.com

Here are a few deal tracker sites, which are nice for finding out where to get cheap stuff - they cover online and brick and mortar stores, and there are dozens of these:

fatwallet.com
spoofee.com
techdeals.com
antirebate.com

I would suggest to shop online for deliverable goods and you are not in hurry. If it is urgent, simply go to the nearest shop
