Is it acceptable when you are on vacation from work (not a management position) to not answer telephone calls or email from work?

Tip for best answer: M$0.37
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

In my opinion, yes it is.

When I am on vacation, I do my best to stay away from work. I don't call and I don't check my work email and I definitely don't go into work unless I absolutely have to.

As far as them calling me; sometimes I will answer the call, sometimes not. Hey, that's what we have caller ID for! If they really need to get in touch with me urgently, they will leave a voice mail message. Then I would call them back.

It's not much of a vacation if you don't stay away from work / work related stuff.

I think it is a personal choice and a manager shouldn't insist that an employee stay in touch when on vacation.

Hi Maxzhichao,

As what Suzd688 said, it is your personal choice if you will not answer a call if you are on a vacation. Just remember to weigh your priorities and try to have a call screening.

It's not a problem anymore - I had to turn off my land line and internet access at home. If I don't answer the cell phone, it's usually because I'm in a low / no signal area. When I do finally get some vacation days, I'm turning the cell off. :)
