Is it a good idea to talk to the media about news and events in order to get press for your business?

In the video below, Donald Trump talks to David Letterman about whether or not a mosque should be built near the World Trade Center site. Obviously, when Donald is on camera, it's good for his business. However, this is a hotly contested topic, and there's almost no way for him to state his opinion without making a few enemies. As a business person, is it a good idea to talk to the media about your opinions, or can it do more harm than good?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I think Donald Trump has probably offended many people with his opinions throughout the years. I'm sure it may have cost him a client or two along the way, but otherwise I don't believe it has hurt his business. However, there is such a thing as good and bad press which can hurt a business. People are opinionated and it is often hard not to talk about specific things when you are directly asked about them. Business owners should definitely be careful about what they say to the media because people take things different ways and it could cause customers to go elsewhere.

When talking about controversial news topics, in you're a business man, you going to alienate some people, even if its a vast minority of them. The best way to handle these things is beat around the bush, not really giving a true personal opinion at all. In the case of Donald Trump, being on the Late Show, he was kind of in the spotlight and knew he had to say something about his thoughts. But generally speaking, it's best to remain quiet.

As with friends, two topics that can end a friendship are politics and religion. Unless you're in the business of giving opinion, leave yours in your home. Customers are important to retain so don't go sending them away with your own agenda! Even the news usually keeps partial.

Back to your question, there's enough people talking about news headlines so why join in? It'll be hard to stand out in that respect. Instead become an expert in your industry and tweet/blog pertinent information or inspirational words regarding the niche. Try it!
