Currently, Howard Stern is on neither AM nor FM radio. He was on FM radio and announced his departure from FM to Sirius Satellite Radio (also known as Sirius XM) on October 6, 2004. Unlike AM or FM radio stations, Sirius is free from FCC regulations. According to several accounts, the incident with Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake at the Super Bowl XXXVIII resulted in stricter, tighter control over content by station owners and managers. Since this event, Stern have reported that he felt his freedom and creativity stifled, thus his decision to move on to Sirius. Stern was given a five-year deal that allows Stern to produce up to three different channels on Sirius with a budget of $100 million per year for all of his production. Stern's contract with Sirius expires on December 31, 2010.
