I am not a neurologist.
Most headaches aren’t genetic. Headaches that are caused by stress, illnesses (like meningitis and sinusitis headaches) and ice headaches don’t have a strong genetic link. Most people aren’t genetically prone to getting those sorts of headaches. Those types of headaches don’t tend to run more strongly in certain families.
The one type of headaches that are genetic is migraines. Migraines are caused by an inflammation of the blood vessels at the front and sides of the head. This inflammation causes increased pressure to those parts of the head which causes the stabbing pain. Although migraine headaches have various triggers (damp air, red wine and seafood being common ones), the tendency for the blood vessels to become inflamed tends to run in families, suggesting a genetic component.
