Is glue really made from horses?

I used to work in my family's grocery store]. There was a guy that came in there often and one of my co-workers said that he goes to auctions, buys old horses, and then sells them to factories for glue. Is this something people really do? Are the horses mistreated? What exactly happens to a horse that is sold to this type of factory? Is this a common practice?

Most glue (not all) is made from the bones and hooves of cattle. Horses typically were sent to the glue factory for preparing glue from the bone and hooves of horses. Rendering plants take waste fat and bone from grocery stores, scraps from restaurants, and dead animals. They cook the meat and fat products together and grind it up. It's becomes animal feed and soap, lubricants, and glue that's used to glue furniture.

Glue is of different types. Remaining glues are made of synthetically. Water based glues are made of natural or synthetic polymers, mixed in water, and are used when one of more surface is porous.

A hundred years ago, many old horses were killed and sent to the glue factory. But today, most glue is made from the bones and hooves of cattle, which thanks to the fast-food burger places, there are a lot of these by-products to be used.
