Is Garry Kasparov, the greatest chess player ever, alive? If so, how can i contact him? Any free books written by him?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

His official website is currently under construction, but sometimes there is contact information on the site.
You might want to bookmark it and check in later.

does have a 'contact us' area on the website and would probably be your best bet right now for contacting him.
He has written some books. If you'd like to read them free of charge, just head down to your local library.
Who knows... you might even find a chess group there!
(my brother was a chess champion and volunteered chess classes at his local library)

M$Here is bio:
Garry Kimovich Kasparov (born April 13, 1963) is a chess grandmaster and is arguably the strongest chess player in history. As of January 2006, Kasparov's 2812 ELO rating places him highest on the FIDE listing. Ranked first in the world for nearly all of the 20 years from 1985 to 2005, Kasparov was the last undisputed World Chess Champion from 1985 until 1993; and continued to be "classical" World Chess Champion (of the PCA and WCA) until his defeat by Vladimir Kramnik in 2000

M$He has authored a chess puzzlebook titled "Garry Kasparov's Chess Puzzle Book". There was another one that I can recall titled "How life imitates chess". I am not sure if you can get them for free , but yeah, you can try your local library. By the way, those books are also available on amazon. You can also try the chess forums that review and recommend good chess books. Hope this helps.

Btw, he is also coaching Magnus Carlsen, the 19-year old who is now ranked #1 in the world.

Did you play, or your brother?
EDIT - Oops, you already said.
Kasparov is alive and well, and a leader in Other Russia, the opposition movement in Russia. I doubt he personally answers random emails from 12 year olds, but you never know. :)
Thanks for the update @philipy - I haven't been too involved in the chess scene since my brother passed.
