Is extreme leg pain and cramps normal after having the flu?

I had a terrible round of the flu followed by a round of strep throat last week. I am finally feeling much better. I'm still taking antibiotics and I don't have any fever. I am developing severe leg pains on my outer leg above the knee. The pain is so bad that it's causing me to yell out and I am having to take plenty of over the counter pain medication. Sometimes it doesn't even stop the pain. What do you think could be wrong?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Influenza or flu is an acute infectious respiratory condition caused by influenza viruses. Apart from fever and chills, the symptoms include headaches, muscle aches followed by secondary bacterial infections and that is why you had strep throat. Its ill effects can last up to 10 days. Since you said you are feeling better after starting antibiotic/antiviral treatment and the fever and other symptoms have subsided, I don’t think there is a need to take an extra narcotic-based medicine. Tylenol is okay though. The muscle aches will subside within a couple of days. Although if it does not, then call your doctor for a followup appointment. Your doctor only knows what is the best mode of treatment for you.

Yes, viral infections causes muscle pain because the virus breaks down muscle cells. You need to take a lot fluid and acetaminophen. If that is not enough ask your doctor for a prescription of opiate based pain medicine.

Is the pain from a muscle cramp? If so, it's possible that you're suffering from a combination of dehydration and potassium deficiency. I had this happen after being sick with the stomach flu recently, and wound up with charley horse cramps in my calves that hurt like mad.

If it could be muscle cramps, drink plenty of water and eat a few bananas. It certainly can't hurt you even if it isn't that, and it can help very quickly if it is.
