With digital zoom lenses the effect is created through an . When you zoom, the computer calculates the percent of enlargement and selects part of the image and essentially creates an enlargement on the view screen. This is why they sometimes seem to jump during zoom since there is a delay created by the computer calculation. Digital zoom images may appear unclear or pixilated since they are essentially enlargements rather than a physical change in the focal length of the lens.
