Is daylight saving times really necessary
we have moved into real-time communications where the time of day isn’t important. Do we really need daylight savings?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Yes, because most people go to work at consistently scheduled times such as 9-5 or 8-4. In a pre-industrial society daylight savings time is of little use. Real time communications have nothing to do with the issue. It is a matter of saving energy on lighting and safety during travel.
By the way, read the below source by Ben Franklin for a number of reasons.
Here's a bit of it:
"For in walking thro' the Strand and Fleet Street one morning at seven o clock, I observed there was not one shop open tho it had been daylight and the sun up above three hours -- the inhabitants of London choosing voluntarily to live much by candlelight and sleep by sunshine, and yet often complaining a little absurdly of the duty on candles and the high price of tallow"
