No, it's not a drug. But the problem is that General Mills has been making claims in its advertisements that Cheerios is "clinically proven to lower cholesterol." And the law says that if you make those claims, your product has to be approved as a drug, which Cheerios obviously isn't. So somebody is going to have to give an inch on this one. Either General Mills will have to stop making those claims, or the FDA will have to relent. We'll see what happens.

You would hope in this case it goes to whoever is right. IS it "clinically proven" to lower cholesterol or is General Mills blowing smoke?

"Clinically proven" is the most overused phrase on commercials. I'm sure that General Mills can set up a lab procedure to prove that it lowers cholesterol. If they wanted to, they could also prove that it helps you grow gills so you can live underwater.

I'd rather put stock in what the FDA says, rather than a corporation.

"Drug" is such a catchy word, isn't it? All sorts of flashy connotations about drugs, huh?

Instead, let's consider whether Cheerios - an oat cereal - should be considered a "medication" or "medical remedy".

The obvious answer is no. It is first and foremost a food for nourishment and enjoyment. It is made and manufactured by a food company. The fact that it has side benefits, I don't think, should qualify it as a medical remedy.

If we're going to call Cheerios as medication because of claims of side benefits, then watch out, following industries, you're next!:

Cranberry Juice - don't you mean UTI drug?
Blueberries - hey there, antioxidant-packing anti-cancer wonder balls!
Sun Chips - high fiber wafers of intestinal healing
Apples - I hear they're a wonder drug that keeps you from having to go to the
doctor!

So where does the madness end, FDA?? Will you not stop before everything in our pantries and refrigerators is labeled as a "drug"??

Doctor, could you please write me a prescription for some red wine and carrots? I just hope my HMO covers prunes! Nature's calling!

Cheerios mainly refers to the famous brand name or trademark of breakfast cereal available in the commercial market. It is produced and marketed by General Mills in the United States. In some countries like Great Britain, it is offered under the Nestle trademark of Cereal Partners. In order to promote the product, several advertisements were introduced by Cereal Partners and General Mills.
