Charlotte, NC has an incredible history and is one of the major cities with regard to the initial settling and development of the country. The area was first settled in 1755 and was used as a fortress by English commander, General Cornwallis during the American Revolution until he was removed by the local inhabitants. Charlotte was a key city then and with both sides fully aware of its importance, Charlotte had been occupied by both English and American forces. Following the Revolution, it became a gold boom town in 1799 and was continuing to grow into the epitome of southern living in the 1800s. Charlotte's antebellum homes are some of the greatest examples of the architecture of the time.
In 1861, North Carolina opted to become a Confederate State, but was later overtaken by Union Forces in 1865. In Charlotte, 40 per cent of the population were slaves at the onset of the war. There were also a group of free blacks living there. Very often citizens from Charlotte would donate their slaves to the Confederacy to help in the battles.
