Is censorship of the internet and computer games in Australia a good thing?

Initally the Australian Government had intended to use internet censorship to prevent child porn from being viewed in Australia and to protect children from viewing content that was explicit or exceptionally hateful. However, it will now be used to censor online content that had not previously been properly discussed or defined such as online games.

Australia is the only developed country without an R18+ classification for games, meaning any titles that do not meet the MA15+ standard - such as those with excessive violence or sexual content - are simply banned from sale by the Classification Board, unless they are modified to remove the offending content.

This has resulted in numerous games being turned away from Australian shores and now threatens to stop online games that have not been classified from being played. This includes many notable online-only games such as World of Warcraft & Half-Life which can be refused classification due to a single player's actions.

The question is: Is censorship of the internet & computer games in Australia a good thing?

On the one side it prevents harmful content entering Australia.
On the other it is a restriction of trade and forces the constituency to obey restricive laws that should be changed.

Obviously I have my own view on this issue....But i'd like to hear your view.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It is idiotic. This decision belongs to the parents. The government has no business making these decisions for them, and (as all governments are) has no knowledge to base their decisions are, which results in things like World of Warcraft being banned.

Setting up a rating system so that parents can make a more informed decision is fine. The government making that decision is abuse of power plain and simple.

It's just stupid. Another sign of the nanny state. Not surprising from a country that makes such rotten TV programs, I guess. How long before the kids of Australia figure out how to bypass this stupidity. A couple days?
