Yes, the crime has soared in Baltimore over the years, especially in West Baltimore. The sad part is that Baltimore is really a charming city with a lot of history. Visit the Inner Harbor for some shopping and some greta bars. Visit Felts point for some "real" Baltimore bars and "Little Italy".

Having gone to school in Baltimore, and teaching inner-city kids for some of the time I was there, I can tell you much of Baltimore is indeed quite dangerous. Every house can be boarded up for literally a mile. These neighborhoods are known to have some very high crime and murder rates. However, if you get out of the bad parts, Baltimore is a very nice city with a bit of charm. Take a trip to the Inner Harbor. It is truly beautiful and the sporting events bring a festivity to it.

In 2006 it had a crime index rate of 6766 per 100,000 people versus 4479 per 100,000 people nationally.
