Atlanta assumed the mantle of capital just after the war, as the railroad boom determined that it was the major transportation mode of Reconstruction. As railroads moved westward, Atlanta’s significance only grew and money poured in. The city was building nearly as fast as they men could haul lumber and get permits to build.
