Is Ann Coulter right? Are all liberals Atheists?

Ann Coulter claims President Obama is not a Muslim she claims Barack Obama is an Atheist and all liberals are Atheists. She does make one exception for Mike Huckabee who according to her is the ONLY Christian liberal.

"The nonsense about President Obama being a Muslim has got to stop," Coulter wrote on the conservative website TownHall.com. "I rise to defend him from this absurd accusation by pointing out that he is obviously an atheist."

"the only evidence for Obama's Christianity is that he faithfully attended the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's Trinity United Church of Christ for 20 years."

What is wrong with Ann Coulter?
Who is the political benefactor in perpetuating the Obama / Religion discourse?
Does Ann have some propaganda or sales angle here?

I don't know much about Ann Coulter, and I know this answer is not helpful on that aspect. However, I do know she is wrong. @cosmopinkice is a Christian and a liberal. If anyone looks back in my heap of questions and answers, they can find the proof. I am not a "fundamentalist" Christian, but I am certainly the complete opposite of an Atheist as far as my faith is concerned. Personally, I think being a liberal and a Christian goes hand and hand -- believing in people's rights and equality. I do believe in the separation of church and state. I think it's impossible to run a government based on religion because of many different reasons. One being, there are so many different ones. Personally, I think Jesus was a liberal and Christians are suppose to follow his example.

Jesus not only was Liberal but a Socialist ( by todays standards ) as well . Comments like these from the right make me wonder just what kind of Christians they really are . What part of " family values " is this kind of nonsence ? Ann Coulter would do well to remember that without Liberals women wouldn't be able to vote or make comments that would make the news .Thanks for saying it so well cosmopinkice .

Is she a pundit or a comedienne? I don't watch tv.

At any rate, she seems 100% wrong. President Obama is not an atheist by any definition or any evidence.

Neither are most liberals. In the USA, most liberals are mainstream Protestant Christians. Others are Jewish or Catholic. Quite a few are agnostic and some atheist. But saying they all are atheist is ridiculous.

Also, she must be joking if she says Huckabee is a liberal, he is a dyed in the wool extreme conservative.

A comedienne or a pundit? I think this quote sums her up nicely.

"Ann Coulter is a lawyer and author, famous for despising anyone politically left of Ronald Reagan." http://www.nndb.com/people/474/000022408/

In fairness that source lists her occupation as "pundit".. funny.

Even though I disagree with Ann Coulter 95% of the time, I do respect her right to her opinions and her zeal in articulating them. The real issue here is that we continue to discuss religion and politics in the same breath. But then again, is there or has there ever been a true separation of Church and State in our country? Probably not and probably never will. My only hope is that we strive towards some sort of level of tolerance in our country especially when referencing our biggest divide: economic stature. In the interim, you better go to Church every Sunday if you want to become President. Those of you who go to mosque or synagogue, or worship outside the big building with the stain glass, remove the Presidency from your goals, at least for another few decades.

What is wrong with Ann Coulter?
I believe there is a character limit on Mahalo answers, so I will not tackle this one tonight.

Who is the political benefactor in perpetuating the Obama / Religion discourse?
I honestly don't think any of dear Ann's banter is personally aimed at benefiting the opposing political party.
But it does have that effect.

Does Ann have some propaganda or sales angle here?
Propaganda... yes, but only in the pursuit of sales, and the other term you forgot... ego.
Dear Ann, Rush, Glenny baby and many other "media moguls" on both sides of the "aisle" need to keep up this endless stream of ridiculousness in order to stay relevant, and to sell their next book.

The problem with your question is that Ann Coulter seems to be correct only by accident on any subject.

Start with:

ANYONE who uses the words 'all', 'never', 'always', or any similar absolute, is suspect, since absolutes apply to very few things outside of basic physics. And not to all of them either.

These words are a warning, that the statement needs to be carefully checked.

Consider a much simpler question: Do all people have 2 arms? You might think so, until you thought about it and realized that there are amputees and birth defects, so that some people are armless and some have more than or less than 2 arms.

There are so many problems with Ann and others who make such nice sound bites: reality is messy, it seldom has nice neat answers, no matter how much you want one.

For example: If Ann defines 'liberal' as equal to 'atheist,' then her statement is true FOR HER, but not for the vast majority who define 'liberal' to a wider group.

The majority of liberals seem to have some sort of religion, just as the majority of humans do--and there are conservative atheists too!

I might just as inaccurately say that all conservatives are Christian.

Since most fundamentalists of any religion are conservative, there are millions of Muslim, Jewish, Hindi etc. conservatives.

Well, I'm an atheist and many of my atheist friends think this. Christopher Hitchens has said he believes the president is an atheist. Its always the same reasons given. His parents were non-believers and he mentioned non-believers in his inaugural address. Also, there is a popular internet video of him pointing out some tough things about the bible. But NO, I don't see him as an atheist, I take him at his word that he's an atheist.

Sad, really sad. Ann, and her right wing extreme compatriots do damage to the Republican cause. any time someone says "All x's are y's" the very structure of the sentence tells you it's a false statement, unless it's a tautology. (Pardon, I used to teach logic at the university.)

There was a time when there were moderate, cordial, intelligent Republicans. Sadly, that is no longer so, evidently.
