Is an outdoor cat likely to run away when they are moved to a new neighborhood?

I have two cats, one of which resides mostly outdoors. My brother and I will be moving into a completely new neighborhood, hundreds of miles away. We may take the cats, but we may not; the decision is yet to be made. One thing that worries me, is that my outdoor cat will get lost and run away because he won't be familiar with the area. This happened to my friend when he moved to California. Maybe this was just a secluded incident, but I still worry. I don't want to take my cat with me if he's not going to be safe. Do cats run away often when they are moved to a new location? If this does occur, will they be able to survive solely in the wild? What can I do to prevent this, if I do decide to take my cat with me?

Not my cat, but so CUTE!

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

ANS: The best thing for a cat is to be an indoor cat. But if you want to make it an outdoor cat, you must keep it inside for several weeks after you move to the new place. We start letting them outside to explore a while for a day or two with me right there with it. After that, it’s mostly been fine. Female cats will often become pregnant, have a litter and then disappear while their kittens are still too tiny to survive without mom, and mom will come home pregnant. Even altered cats may be injured by cats or other animals or be hit by cars. Three of my indoor (1), outdoor (2) cats were killed by dogs and cars.

Cats a year old or younger are more likely to get lost outside than older cats. Maybe its that they wander more or investigate more, but I have found that older cats seem to get lost less. Male cats go out and around for quite a distance, but they often have people and homes in spite of that. The same for female cats, although they may wander less. Girl cats do best indoors. Neutered males may be ok indoors. Unneutered males want to go out, and its really difficult to keep them in. The cat is probably better off if it is now with its siblings and mother to just stay with them. I have seen from experience how cats do attach to other cats

When people move and have an outdoor cat they need to let the cat out a little at a time and watch it. This has to be done for a while until the cat gets the idea that the house is his home. Even then, they sometimes wander. If you’re going to take the cat, put it in your garage or in your house to get used to your scents for a while (week). When you feed it, say something loudly, EEEEEAAAAATTTT in a high toned voice. That way when you feed and yell eat, it will recognize the voice and return back if lost. Good luck..
