Is an "Olive Oil Cleanse" a good idea even if you have never had any issues with your gall bladder -- just for a maintenance type thing?

What is called anecdotal evidence is present on the internet:

Crap coated olive oil. I have suspected the same thing. It is not covered though. It is a soft but firm ball. Mine tend to be green with a little black stuff once. The first gall stone flush I did I had large ones. Maybe a dozena s big as my thumbnail and hordes of pebbles. This time I only had small ones, maybe a few as big as my pinky fingernail. On my second one I got out some black gravel. I am in contact with people who do these flushes all around the world. She collects them and sends them to labs to have them analyzed. She even knows what part of life they come form and can tell what sort of foods the person ate by the color. For example my green ones are from growing up on sugar and starch. People that do these fasts repeatedly - and even in young people like me it takes awhile to clear them all out - eventually cease passing stones. So your theory is bunk, I will say, but I have read things from googling that say the same about the gallstone flush and claim to have all manner of evidence suporting their conclusions as well. ..........www.curezone.com is the first site I encountered with the flush. They have M.D.'s there in the forums who perhaps can answer some questions. Right now I am way tuned in to the Dr. Jubb and Annie Jub 14 day nutritional fasting program and am on day 6! I actually passed more stone like things today. A few were reddish and the rest were green then last nights raw soup dinner(the first thick food I ate besides electrolyte lemonade and teas) came out.

And from the same web page:
Olive oil, which contains mono-unsaturated fatty acids, and nut and seed oils like flax seed or walnut oil, which contain the poly-unsaturated essential fatty acids, are beneficial to the gall-bladder. Use them daily on salads or in dishes like mashed potatoes. The fatty acids in these oils stimulate bile flow to flush out small stones and stimulate the production of the digestive enzyme lipase needed for fat metabolism for constipation take flax seed followed by 3/4 cup of olive oil.http://www.alive.com/2763a9a2.php

From a different site, dialogues with a doctor:
Patient: Linda // Jan 20, 2009 at 7:55 pm
I recently had an ultrasound because of pain under my ribs (right side) The test showed I had a 2 cm gallstone. The doctor assumed I would want my gallbladder removed. I was appalled to think this might be the first option presented. I have been seeing an acupunturist who also has expertise in Chinese herbal medicine for 2 months now. I have also been extremely careful about what I eat, concentrating on eating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and soy products. Almost vegan but with occasional animal/animal products. I have seen no severe flair ups but also no complete relief either. My question: How long should I give this treatment method a chance to work? Is there some other alternative medicine I could try? My doctor said trying a “olive oil flush” would probably not be effective due to the size of the stone.

Dr. Stan Gardner // Jan 23, 2009 at 11:00 pm
Linda, A 2 cm stone is about 1 inch in diameter, and is too big to pass through the bile duct and subsequent common bile duct to be passed to the intestinal tract. The purpose of the liver/gall bladder/olive oil flush is to empty the gallbladder of ’sludge’ or very small stones in the gall bladder. Although I have never tried this recommendation in the office, may I suggest two products: 1) phosphatidylcholine (lecithin) 100 mg three times per day. This should prevent the formation of future stones. 2) peppermint oil (? dosage). This has the capability of breaking down the stone. I would try this for 6-12 months (or indefinitely if you have no significant symptoms). With the gall bladder removed, you no longer can concentrate bile, which is important in the digestion of fats that are ingested. Keep the gall bladder if at all possible.

So, while the evidence is circumstantial, there appears to be a case for liver flushes as a preventative measure. If the gallstones are very large, try Dr. Garner's recipe.
