Is an apology enough?

http://www.npr.org/blogs/politicaljunkie/2010/01/we_wouldnt_be_having_all_these.html

Democratic senate majority leader, Harry Reid was quoted by reporters as saying some quite racist statemments concerning President Obama during the election...."that Obama could win because he was "light-skinned" and had "no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one."

Obama accepted his apology, stating, "without question because I've known him for years, I've seen the passionate leadership he's shown on issues of social justice and I know what's in his heart. As far as I am concerned, the book is closed."

Senate GOP leader, Lott, was forced to resign after making a seemingly racist statement.

Many are arguing being democrat gives you the right to say such things yet when a republican does this it's unacceptable.

Should Reid have to resign as Lott did or is an apology enough?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I don't think that a resignation is in order, in fact, I don't think this comment is even particularly racist. I think there is an element of truth in his statement.

Obama does not have strong black facial features, since he's the product of a black parent and a white one. Only his dark skin and hair type give away his black heritage.

People who voted for him wanted change, but not TOO MUCH change. I feel that it is unlikely, at least right now, that any politician who had strong African features and a dialect would be elected president.

And please don't tell me that's a racist comment! It's just my opinion.

Unfortunately, any time someone makes a comment about the cultural or physical differences between the races it's call racist, when sometimes it's just a comment on the way things are.

We all need to stop being so PC; using PC words doesn't change anybody's true attitude.

Although it's entirely my personal opinion and you may not agree with this, but I think that an apology is enough because a resignation is not a solution. Whatever told is told and nobody can bring back the words that are once out of the mouth. He is apologizing means he is admitting his fault. I think that's enough.

I don't think resignation is needed.

Thanks
