I wouldn't necessarily say it's 'fixed', but I would say it's totally a popularity contest. It's not much different than the things that go on around the internet when folks put up links and say, 'Go vote for me!'... the more votes, the better your chances. It's not always about who is the 'best' but rather who can 'bribe', 'convince', 'cajole' the most people.
American Idol really isn't that different in that respect--it's a popularity contest.
But I guess since it's 'pop' culture, maybe a 'popularity' contest is what it's supposed to be?...
