Is America obsessed with sex?

Everywhere you look, tv, magazines, movies, posters, all you see is sex. Sex in ads, on shows, used to sell cars, toothpaste, whatever. Is America obsessed with sex as a culture, or is this more of a global issue than I'm aware?

I haven't been to the US yet, but I have lived in Europe and traveled to middle east and I believe marketers would use anything that sells and appeals to their customers. Now, why sex might seem to be at the top of the list in commercials and other ads in US is probably because America , as a society , is more open and liberal than several other societies.

This is definitely the case when compared to the middle east and it also holds true when compared to India, China and most of Asia. As for Europe, I believe there are several countries where sex is used in commercials to create greater interest and exposure and get people talking about the ad and product.

So, in my opinion , America is only as obsessed with sex as most other cultures, but marketers take the advantage of reaching out to a more liberal and tolerant society and employ sex as an inseverable tool.

Yes and it's ok...to some degree. I see it as the byproduct of having more exposure via tv, magazines, movies and/or ads.
It's everywhere you turn...yet it's way out of reach. You are powerless to do anything but observe and be obsessed.

Other countries/culture see sex as either for producing only or they are too busy with their lives to think about sex.

Most cultures are obsessed with sex. America has a special talent with greed though.

I believe so --- It is what sells pretty much EVERYTHING..and without it, they would be nothing. I doubt consumerism would even reach the masses through mind numbing sexual advertisements and blatantly obvious programming.
Some people don't even see it, yet it's ALWAYS underlying.
If it's not in the script, it's the lack of said 'shirt' on the females.

I think Men and Women have genetically different views regarding sex. I think women are programmed to select the best mate and men are programmed to mate with as many as possible. The women's job is to preserve the quality of the species and the mens job is to keep it going.

I think our culture is fairly repressive when it comes to sex and many of our social issues surrounding sex stem from that repression. Americans are so hung up when it comes to sex and nudity I think it makes something very natural seem naughty or dirty.

If our culture would get over it sex wouldn't sell as much and a celebrity occasionally exposing themselves during the super bowl or getting out of a car wouldn't be such a big deal.

If everyone would just take a breath and let consenting adults do what they wish in private and not make such a big deal out of it I think our society would be a lot more pleasant.

This is just my opinion.

I do not agree this is the case, all cultures and societies are what one can call "obsessed" with sex such is mankinds disposition and nature. But the cultural understanding and expressions of sexuality differ greatly among regions and even individuals. So what one might find sexy in one part of the world another will find repulsive, vulgar,or obscene. This changes and is as prone to individual taste as is fashion. The Middle East is often singled out as a culture which has harsh understanding of sexuality and intimacy while i would argue that large parts of it have a much more liberal understanding of it then stereotypes would suggest. For example British soldiers in Afghanistan would be troubled to encounter elderly Afghan man practicing Pederasty around Kandahar. This is and was a very common thing in the Islamic world while in the USA the general opinion is that it is vulgar and obscene. If one reads the 15th century work The Perfumed Gardens (http://www.sacred-texts.com/sex/garden/) one gets a better sense of the place and role of sexuality in the Arab world.
So the answer is the USA is not more or less obsessed with sexuality then other regions or cultures but it's expressions are different and can come across as more or less "obsessed" to the individual observer and their cultural understanding.

I think it could be considered an obsession, although I do think I lean more towards America just becoming more open to the subject, and want to talk about it freely and express themselves.
