Is algebra a college requirement?

Do I need to take it in high school?
Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Hi @cruise_t!
Usually, Algebra is being introduced in high school well in my school as early as first year. Though practically it looks a bit complicated because you will be dealing mostly with letters (variables) and numbers, you will find it very useful in your daily living. You cannot avoid calculations. So when you reach college, you will still be taught Algebra because it is the second most important Math next to Basic Mathematics that deals with the fundamentals. So most courses require you to take Algebra, I just don’t know what course doesn’t include it but that’s what I know of. And whether you need to take it in high school, my answer is yes. You should learn Algebra while you are in high school because it will be your best preparation for your College Algebra.

Algebra is a requirement just to do math on a cell phone!

I know that some online colleges have an algebra course that resemebles what I took in first year and second year algebra in middle school and then high school. For those schools, I don't think you would need to take algebra in high school, although most schools teach first year algebra in 7th or 8th grade for advanced students and 9th grade for everyone else. Second year algebra is generally taken in 10th grade or 11th or 12th for the average student. Advanced students take calculus in high school. Most major universities don't even offer algebra that is taken in high school. They start their math courses with statistics or calculus. Linear algebra is offered a most universities but that is a higher level math course than basic algebra taught in high school or the college algebra taught at many online colleges.
