Generally speaking, Tropical North Queensland really only has two distinct seasons, the 'wet' and the 'dry'. The wet season, although highly unpredictable over recent years, is in the summer months, usually between December and April, with the bulk of the annual rainfall being received from January to March. The rest of the year is comparatively dry. But depending on your own particular interests, there are other seasonal variations to take into account when you plan your visit to Tropical North Queensland.
WINTER:June, July, August
This is the busy season in and around Cairns. The weather is usually cooler, of course, but still reaches mid twenties most days, dropping to around 17 degrees overnight.
It's possibly not the best time for birdwatching, as it's too early for the breeding season, and there isn't much movement as far as migratory species.
But it is a fine time to spot the big crocodiles, as they lay in the mud on the riverbanks, soaking up the sun.
SPRING: September, October, November
Towards the end of November, it can certainly start to feel like summer, with the days heating up to 30 degrees, and the nights a balmy 20 degrees.
Any keen birdwatcher will know that this is a great time for their favourite hobby. The ideal time for birdwatching is October and into early November. Birds are going through their mating displays, migratory species are arriving, and generally speaking, things are starting to 'get busy' in the animal kingdom.
Bushwalkers will be treated to the delights of blooming wildflowers and rainforest orchids.
SUMMER: December, January, Febuary
As we said, it's difficult to predict, but towards the end of the summer, the heavy rains usually start. Days are usually hot and humid, building to an afternoon or evening storm.
Surprisingly, this can be a great time for scuba diving, with winds usually quite calm, and underwater visibility at its best - sometimes up to 50 metres!
But it's not the best time of year to see crocodiles. There will still be a few around, but they're more likely to be in the water, rather than sunning themselves on the bank where they make easy photo opportunities.
Birds nests are still active, and lucky birdwatchers can enjoy glimpses of chicks in the nest.
Until the first half of December, tourism is a little slow, but as Christmas nears, expect the crowds. This can be a great time to be here if you're out to party!
AUTUMN: March, April, May
Daytime temperatures still hover close to 30 degrees, and nights just over 20.
Migratory birds leave for their winter home, and others arrive from colder climates to escape the onset of winter. Spring's fledglings can be seen around the nests, and baby crocs hatch.
Easter is a particularly busy period for Cairns, with an influx of tourists.
So, as you can see, any time can be a good time to visit Tropical North Queensland, depending on what you plan to do here. If you're still trying to make up your mind, have a browse through our Tropical North Queensland Events Calendar to see what range of events are on in the area throughout the year. Maybe that will help
