Is a tripod a must-have for professional photographers?

Why should amateurs consider having a tripod? How do I choose a good tripod? How much would they cost me?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00

Tripods are absolute necessities for professional photographers. To shoot outdoors scenes with great depth of field you need to close down the aperture and therefore need slow shutter speeds and long exposures. The tripod keeps the camera steady eliminating camera shake and blurring.

You can place a detachable flashon a tripod and sync it to your camera to get a fill light on a subject or a side light. Tripods are also useful for sporting events or wildlife photography when you are shooting with a very heavy lens and may want to pan with the moving subject to create blurred motion action. Amateurs need tripods for the same reasons professionals do. However, rather then spending $2000 for fluid head, you can probably buy a decent one for $75.

Yes it is a must have for professionals, as well as for all photo enthusiasts.

You cannot do any slow-shutter/long-exposure work without a tripod. You cannot do any self-timer work without a tripod. You cannot do any long lens (ie. high zoom) work without a tripod.

You can get a decent, but basic tripod for $75. Avoid the cheapies that cost less - save up until you have at least $75, because otherwise you are throwing-away your money. You will have to pay much more than that for a professional-level tripod (ie. Gitzo brand tripods easily go for $400 - $1500), but that is not at all necessary for an amateur.
