Is a Pentium Dual Core Processor equivalent or better then a Pentium 4 Processor?

I'm needing a Pentium 4 processor but the computers I have found that are most affordable are Pentium dual core processors...is it the same thing or better?

Thanks!

According to a post by 'jumpmaster' at tomshardware.com, he said "the core 2 duo is about 4 times faster than that pentium4. the slowest core 2 duo will easily beat those processors. you should definetly go with the core2duo and at least 2gigs of ram for new apps and games."

One thing you need to consider is are the programs and operating system you use capable of supporting the dual core processor. If they are then it is definitely faster but if not then you will probably not see any improvement. BUT more and more programs are coming out with multiple core support.

I want to add some words:

- Core 2 Duo is not Dual Core
- Dual Core is better than Pentium 4
- Core 2 Duo is better than Dual Core
- Core 2 Quad is better than Core 2 Duo (of course very expensive)
- For gaming, Pentium 4 is adequate but a bit slow
- For gaming, Core 2 Duo is awesome
- For gaming, you also need to consider the graphics card and memory
- Most programs still do not support multiple cores
- But most games already support multiple cores

A Pentium Dual Core Processor is better than a Pentium 4 Processor. The Pentium Dual Core Processor has 2 processors instead of one like the Pentium 4.
