Is a Mario Valentino bag the same thing as a Valentino bag? Is it a knockoff brand?

I bought a purse from a retailer on sale for $50 and it says Valentino on the front as well as Mario Valentino sPA on the tag and inside the bag. I thought it was a good deal but its missing the dust bag, cards and all the jazz that comes with designer bags. Its from a real store so I'm sure its authentic. I'm just not sure if Mario Valentino is a real brand. Is it the same as the $400 valentinos at Saks?
Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I just returned from Milan, Italy where I purchased a "Valentino" bag in a litle shop for about 65 Euro. I asked the woman if the bag was authentic and she said, "Yes, it's a Valentino."

When I got home I did some research on the internet. Apparently the bag is a real Mario Valentino, which is NOT the same as the famous Italian couture fashion designer Valentino Garavani. From what I can tell, Mario Valentino established his brand first, which specializes in leather goods. Both designers use the name Valentino. When I closely inspected my bag I see that the tags have VALENTINO in bold print and Mario in small print.

Mario Valentino seems to be a very reputable company more well-known in Italy than in the US. Even though I wrongly assumed and purchased my bag believing that it was a "real Valentino" I am still happy with it. It's unique and not many people in the States will have it. Plus it will always remind me of my time in Italy.

I hope you enjoy your bag as well!
