Hi there and thank you for your question. Ferrets like any animal can and do bite on occasion. However, ferrets generally bite down on something to pick it up and hide it. There are only a few cases that I am aware of where a ferret has outright attacked it's owner and that was becasue the animal was mistreated and malnourished.
With that being said if your children are very young it would be wise to keep them away from the ferret unless you are supervising them while they are around the animal to see how it reacts to them.
There are no known skin diseases that ferrets can carry however they have a genetic predisposition to getting cancer of the adrenal glands, lymph system and pancreas.
